ENERGY STAR vs. Energy Efficient
Proven energy efficiency and performance.
When it comes down to it, that’s why millions of homeowners each year select ENERGY STAR products for their homes. And for good reason: since 2008, with help from ENERGY STAR, Americans have saved $19 billion on their utility bills.
Want to maximize your home lighting’s energy savings and minimize your environmental impact? Only light products with the ENERGY STAR label meet the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy’s strict standards for energy efficiency.
- CFLs. They’re all the same – right? Not exactly. Only ENERGY STAR CFLs have been tested to meet minimum lifespan, start/warm-up times and efficacy requirements. The bottom line: these lamps are proven to deliver optimal performance and savings.
- Residential LEDs. The ENERGY STAR advantage when it comes to LEDs? Quality and performance. ENERGY STAR-qualified LED lighting must provide a certain level of brightness, consistent light output, excellent color quality, instant turn-on and more.
- Light Fixtures. Take your energy savings to the next level with ENERGY STAR-qualified light fixtures. Available in a variety of styles, ENERGY STAR-qualified light fixtures use 75% less energy than traditional fixtures. Replace your top five most-used fixtures with ENERGY STAR models and you’ll see a $70 savings each year.
- Ceiling Fans. Ceiling fan/light combo units with the ENERGY STAR label reduce energy usage by 50% with improved motor and blade designs.

Five Simple Ways to Honor Earth Day at Home
Change starts at home. And there’s no better day to adopt greener practices in your home than Earth Day 2010 on April 22.
Here are a few simple ways to honor our planet on Earth Day – and every day:
- Turn out the lights. Seems obvious enough, but it turns out that turning out unneeded lights is great way to reduce energy usage.
- Go CFL! We can’t say it enough: ditch the incandescents! Need more motivation to make the switch? To get a buy-one, get-one coupon from Yale, click here.
- Turn off the computer at night. Make the commitment to shut down your computer each evening for the next year, starting today. You could save up to $90 annually in energy costs!
- Wash your clothes in cold water. Warm water isn’t needed for most loads and 90% of a washer’s energy goes toward heating the water.
- Use both sides. There’s two sides to every paper. Today, set your printer to print on both sides and reduce your paper usage by 50%.
