Finding the Perfect Match…for Your Lamp
It’s February and love is in the air. For each lamp base – big or tall, short or stout, sophisticated or simple – there’s the perfect shade. Proportion, style, color and function are all fundamental rules of lamp-base matchmaking. Let’s take a look at how you can create a romantic environment – and save some green – by using these tips from the pros.
- Find the Right Size. Measure the height of the lamp from the base to the socket. As a general rule, the shade width should be approximately the same measurement as the height of the base. There are many exceptions to this rule, such as buffet or floor lamps. When in doubt, let the lighting experts at Yale help you make the perfect choice. The shade should always cover the lamp’s hardware.
- Leave Room for Energy Savings. CFLs are taller than incandescent bulbs. Be sure you choose a harp – the hardware that connects your shade to the lamp – that’s tall enough to allow a few inches from the top of the CFL to the top of the shade.
- Stay in Shape. As a general rule, pair round lamps with round shades and square lamps with square shades, and so on.
- Have Fun with Color and Style. Visualize the kind of mood you want to create. A crisp white or off-white shade will create a bright environment, while a deep red or earthy brown shade will bring a subtle warmth to the room. Like a good matchmaker, it’s important to match the style and personality of the base with a complementary shade.
