Cool Energy Savings with Ceiling Fans

With temperatures – and energy costs – warming up this spring, you may be considering ways to cool your home. Installing a ceiling fan is actually a great year-round investment: it creates cool breezes in the summer and pushes warm air down into a room during the winter. More comfort, less cost – it’s no wonder we’re such big fans.

Thinking about investing in a ceiling fan? A few things to consider:

  • A fan for all seasons. In the summer, operate your ceiling fan in the counterclockwise direction to create a wind chill factor that keeps you cool. In the winter, use your ceiling fan at low speed in the clockwise direction to force warm air near the ceiling down into the room.
  • Buy with confidence. The key to a good ceiling fan is a quality motor. Look for one that offers a manufacturer’s warranty. Blade pitch and construction also impact a ceiling fan’s operation. Generally speaking, look for more angled blades constructed of hardwood.
  • Big-time energy savings. ENERGY STAR qualified ceiling fans are 50% more efficient than conventional models. If your ceiling fan doesn’t come with a light kit, be sure to select one with the ENERGY STAR logo for maximum energy savings.
  • Turn it off. Ceiling fans don’t alter a room’s temperature; they’re designed to keep you comfortable while you’re in the room. When you leave the room, be sure to turn off the ceiling fan to save energy.
  • The style’s the limit. With today’s extensive selection of styles and finishes – from contemporary to traditional, from brushed nickel to bronze – keeping a room cool (or warm) has never been so stylish.
