Cozy, Layered Lighting in 4 Easy Steps

With fall getting into full swing, it’s time to embrace all things autumnal: cooler temperatures, cozy sweaters and vivid trees emblazoned in red, orange and yellow. At home, creating warmth and comfort with an energy-smart layered lighting plan will help transition you into the season of shorter days with ease. Here’s a few ways to get a gorgeous, layered glow without going broke or taking down the electrical grid:

  1. Cast An All-Over Glow. Ambient lighting casts indirect illumination throughout the room. It’s a must. Consider how much the room’s natural light, the color of the walls and your design style. Select overhead lights like flush mount fixtures or pendants outfitted with energy-efficient CFLs.
  2. Illuminate Your Tasks. Consider what kinds of activities will take place in the room and where they’ll happen. Chopping vegetables in the kitchen? You’ll need under-cabinet lighting (try the latest LED versions for super energy savings). Reading in the family room? An adjustable floor lamp will do the trick.
  3. Accent Your Room. This is where things get really interesting. Add drama and draw attention to special focal points in the room, like a wall-hanging, painting or brick wall, with down lights, adjustable spot-lights or even LED rope lights.
  4. Infuse Warmth. Installing dimmers on all kinds of fixtures enables you to adjust lighting levels according to your mood or activity while reaping significant energy savings. Also, consider switching up translucent lampshades for opaque versions to create a warmer atmosphere.
